Modeling the Phenology of the Codling Moth
Better predicting codling moth attacks to protect our orchards
The problem :
The codling moth is a small butterfly whose caterpillars attack apples, pears, and nuts, causing significant damage in orchards. To combat it effectively, action must be taken at the right time, when the butterflies appear. But with climate change, current forecasting tools are becoming less reliable.
Our project
We will:
- Update our knowledge of the biology of the codling moth (development, life cycles) based on French populations.
- Testing a new American forecasting model that calculates outbreak dates based on climate and geography
The goal
Building solid biological foundations to enable the future development of free and reliable forecasting tools to intervene at the right time, reduce treatments, and adapt to climate change.
